Does a cannabis cartridge or disposable have you up in smoke because it is clogged? Have no fear, North Star Canna is here to help when your spirits are not so “high”.
A clogged cannabis cartridge or disposable is a prevalent issue among individuals in the cannabis community who use these devices for medical or adult-use recreational consumption. We understand how frustrating a clogged smoking device can be and we are here to help our consumers troubleshoot with safety and guidance before giving their dispensary a call for further assistance.
Cartridges:
A cannabis cartridge, also known as a “cart” or “weed cart,” is a pre-filled tank that holds cannabis concentrate or oil that connects to a heating element or battery to vaporize cannabis concentrate. A cartridge often clogs due to improper storage, thickened oil, or device incompatibility. It is recommended to store your cartridge in a cool but not cold location to prevent issues. Warmer storage, such as leaving the cartridge in a hot car, results in a thinner consistency that will burn up faster. Cold storage, like leaving a cartridge in a car during a chilly winter, will result in a thickened consistency that could impact the functioning of the heating element. Most cannabis cartridges have a wick that connects the oil to the heating element (coil). When a drag or hit is taken, the concentrate is directly heated on the coil's surface, producing the smoke you inhale. Cartridges typically come in many shapes and sizes but are designed for ease and discreet use. The following are examples of troubleshooting steps, safety mechanisms, and precautions to use when your cartridge gets clogged:
Troubleshooting steps for a clogged cartridge:
- Thermal Regulation- gently warm the cartridge between your hands to soften the oil and restore an easier flow to the heating element. Avoid using high heat or open flames to prevent damage to the cartridge or harm to yourself or others.
- Clear Mouthpiece- if the mouthpiece is clogged near the tip, gently scrape out debris with a paperclip, pin, skinny wire, or cotton swab for condensation that can get trapped.
- Priming Technique- inhale your cartridge while it is disconnected from the energy source to draw in oil to the coil, then start heating the element and inhale normally. Take short, steady puffs rather than long drags to help oil into the chamber.
- Connection Cleaning- regularly clean your device and the connections with isopropyl alcohol and cotton swabs to ensure tight, debris-free connectivity.
- Voltage Adjustment and Battery- modify the device settings on your heating element within the manufacturer-recommended ranges to ensure vaporization without overheating. Make sure your heating device is properly charged.
- Storage- make sure the cart is stored in an upright position for optimal use and concentrate flow.
Safety Mechanisms and Precautions:
- User Guidelines- Always adhere to the manufacturer's instructions regarding usage, storage, and maintenance.
- Manufacturer Quality and Overheating/Protection- Always buy from a licensed store or dispensary for certified cartridges that meet safety standards to reduce leakage and combustion risks. Most modern models incorporate an automatic shut-off when temperatures exceed safe limits without overheating for protection.
- Battery- use a compatible battery for said cartridge (usually 510-thread)
- Proper Disposal- always follow local guidelines for the disposal of cartridges to prevent environmental contamination and personal exposure.
- Child-Resistant Designs- most disposables are child-resistant or have packaging to prevent accidental ingestion.
Disposables:
A cannabis disposable is a type of all-in-one vaporizer designed for single use, mostly consisting of cannabis concentrate/oil, and contains a heating element or battery. These devices are usually pre-charged and some can even be charged again. Disposables are compact and lightweight, typically resembling a small e-cig, making them discreet and portable. Disposables do not require refilling or charging, but many do come with the option to charge again if the battery depletes before the concentrate. Many of the troubleshooting and safety guidelines align with those of clogged cartridges, but also differ in some ways. Below are troubleshooting tips for a clogged disposable and important safety measures to keep in mind for future use:
Troubleshooting a clogged Disposable:
- Thermal Regulation- gently warm the disposable pod between your hands to soften the oil and restore an easier flow to the heating element. Avoid using high heat or open flames to prevent damage to disposable or harm to yourself or others.
- Clear Mouthpiece- if the mouthpiece is clogged near the tip, gently scrape out debris with a thin wire, pin, or paperclip. If condensation occurs, try using a cotton swab in the mouthpiece to remove it.
- Priming Technique- inhale without activating the heat element to draw oil onto the coils, then start heating the element and inhale normally. Take short, steady puffs rather than long drags to help oil into the chamber.
- Reverse Blow Technique- Locate the air intake (usually on the bottom of side of the device) and forcefully blow into the air intake to blow out any clogs or built up product from the mouth piece at the other end.
- Low Concentrate or Oil Level- make sure the concentrate is not too low to avoid disruption of the flavor and function of the disposable, also store in an upright position to ensure oil reaches the battery connection for proper draw or inhale.
Safety Mechanisms and Precautions:
- User Guidelines- Always adhere to the manufacturer's instructions regarding usage, storage, and maintenance.
- Manufacturer Quality and Overheating/Protection- to ensure safe heating and protection, purchase from a licensed store or dispensary for certified cartridges that meet the correct safety standards. Most modern models incorporate an automatic shut-off when temperatures exceed safe limits without overheating for protection.
- Child-Resistant Designs- most disposables are child-resistant or have packaging to prevent accidental ingestion.
- Proper Disposal- always follow local guidelines for disposal of disposables to prevent environmental contamination and personal exposure.
