Have you ever walked into a cannabis dispensary and seen “diamonds” on the menu for the first time? It might make you stop and think, Wait... did I just walk into a jewelry store? Chances are, you are exactly where you are supposed to be, because in today's cannabis industry, diamonds are truly becoming a girl’s best friend. In this article, we will highlight what cannabis diamonds are, the two common processes used to make THCA Diamonds, and the best ways to use them.

What are Cannabis Diamonds?

Cannabis diamonds, also known as THCA diamonds, are one of the most potent cannabis concentrates in the market today. These crystal-like extracts are made primarily with Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid (THCA), the non-intoxicating precursor to Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) found naturally in cannabis plants. When heat is applied through smoking, vaping, or dabbing, THCA converts into THC through decarboxylation, producing effects commonly known as a “high”. Cannabis diamonds are known for their diamond-like appearance, often resembling small translucent crystals or shards. Their glass-like structure and high potency have made them increasingly popular among experienced cannabis consumers and concentrate enthusiasts. Diamonds are most often paired with terpene-rich concentrate commonly known as “terp sauce,”. This method of consumption can add some flavor back in by reintroducing terpenes. Terpenes are responsible for the aroma and flavor of cannabis, contributing notes of citrus, pine, fruit, or diesel.

How are Cannabis Diamonds Made?

Producing cannabis diamonds involves advanced extraction and refinement techniques. There are two ways to make cannabis diamonds: the closed-loop extraction method and the crystalline method. The closed-loop extraction method is the cannabis standard method for producing safe, high quality extracts from cannabis plants while minimizing exposure to solvents by using a sealed, recirculating system to safely extract cannabinoids and terpenes from trichome-rich cannabis material. Below is the breakdown of how closed-loop extraction works.

  1. Prep Plant Material: A trichome-rich cannabis plant is loaded into the extraction column.
  2. Solvent Wash: A solvent is introduced, such as butane or propane, in a closed-loop distillation; the solvent circulates through the cannabis plant material to extract cannabinoids, terpenes, and lipid fats.
  3. Collection and partial separation: The solvent and extract mixture are separated by using heat and pressure.
  4. Saturation: A small amount of the solvent mixture is retained to create a supersaturated solution.
  5. Crystallization: The supersaturated solution is then exposed to a specific temperature and pressure for an extended period, ranging from days to weeks. These conditions promote the slow formation of THCA crystals or “Diamonds.”
  6. Purge and process: THCA crystals are now formed, and the leftover solvent is removed using heating and vacuum pressure.

The crystalline method is a slow process that is commonly used in well-equipped laboratories. This special process focuses on crystal formation from the supersaturated solution, often starting with a concentrate that already contains some solvent. The three main steps to the specialized process are:

  1. Prep or create a solution: Begin with a supersaturated solution or solvent-rich concentrate.
  2. Introduce crystallization or growth: The supersaturated solution is placed into a controlled environment with temperature, pressure, and agitation to start the crystallization process. This process can take several days to weeks, during which the diamonds or crystals continue to grow.
  3. Isolation or separation: once crystals or diamonds are to the desired size, they are then removed from the “solvent sauce” and any remaining oil.

How Do You Consume Cannabis Diamonds?

Some of the most common methods to consume cannabis diamonds are dabbing, vaping, and adding to cannabis flower. Below is a breakdown of how to use each method.

Dab Method: is used by placing the diamonds on a hot surface and inhaling the resulting vapor. Dab rigs are often used, which consist of a glass water pipe, a nail or banger, and a torch to heat the nail. Diamonds are placed on a heated nail, which causes them to vaporize instantly, and the vapor is inhaled through the rig.

Vaporizing Method: is used by placing diamonds into a vaporizer pen that is compatible with THCA diamonds. A pea-sized amount is placed into the vaporizer chamber. The diamonds are then heated to the desired temperature, and then the vapor is inhaled through the mouthpiece.

Flower Method: is used by placing diamonds on ground-up cannabis flower, either on top of a glass pipe, bong, or rolled into a joint. When the flower is lit, the heat will burn the flower and the diamonds, converting it into THC to intensify the overall experience and effects.

When it comes to cannabis diamonds, there are only a couple of methods for producing safe, high-quality extracts and a handful of ways for them to be consumed. Whether you dab, vape, or add THCA diamonds to flower, it's recommended to start with a small amount (start slow and go low) for those unfamiliar with potent concentrates.
